General: The ancestors of this breed populated the harbor of Atlantis long ago. They were white or had pointed colors, like the seagulls. Sailors and merchants thanked them for taking care of the vermin on ships and in warehouses, and the cats could often be found on board of a ship during the journey. It was a good omen when a cat gave birth on a ship.
Shortly before the legendary tragedy of Atlantis, no kittens were born at all. On the other hand, the cats were more eager than usual to board a ship. When Atlantis sank, several ships were on their way and a group of cats survived. The sailors decided to keep them as a treasured memory of their lost homeland.
The breed known as Shiranami was bred from the descendants of those cats. Breeders used ancient logbooks and old stories passed down from the survivors of Atlantis to make them look as much like the cats of old Atlantis as possible. Tabby patterns and other genes, like dilute, were added during the centuries, not only by the breeders, but by the cats themselves as well, since they often mated with the cats of other harbors. The name “Shiranami” was selected from a group of suggestions by drawing lots. It is Japanese and means “white waves”.
Shiranamis are strong and tough, just like a common sailor. They are not afraid of water, although not too eager to bath. They are ideal pets for people who like sailing and cats at the same time. Just note that a Shiranami will think (s)he is the captain of your ship.
